Movie of the Week

Double Indemnity 1944

Need a little murder to shake up the cold and damp winter? Need some ruthlessness to disrupt the joy running about your town? Well, we have the perfect choice for you. Double Indemnity will not only capture you completely with its quick, smart dialogue but it will also satisfy your need to see all the ruthless passion anyone can be inflamed by.

Walter is an insurance salesman with a fast paced dialogue and a smart sense of intelligence - that is, until he meets Phyllis Dietrichson. Phyllis is a seductive, darkly charming woman who needs something real bad. Something like someone to kill her husband. Walter goes to the Dietrichson house to renew an automobile insurance policy. Immediately, there is an attraction, one so sinister it's more than exciting to watch. Their affair begins and, soon enough, Walter finds himself at the center of a murder plot for a double indemnity clause.

It seemed like the perfect murder but Walter's boss soon begins to suspect Phyllis of murder, even though the police have not. He suspects she killed her husband with the help of another man but not his friend, not Walter. Walter soon finds secrets about Phyllis, how she might have killed her husbands wife to marry him, how she might be double crossing him. But he can't tear himself from her. The interest is too deep, the allure she possesses is too much. He has to let go though, after all, he committed murder for money and a woman. If he doesn't get either, what was the point?

Double Indemnity is one of the best films I've ever seen. It's noir base is absolutely arresting and the acting is more than superb. It's odd to think that Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray had to be persuaded to do the film because who could really play out those roles like they had done? It's a thrill from the start and it leaves us wondering if murder can really smell like honeysuckle.
